That sense of carefree spontaneity that defines most boho lifestyles can lead to a bit of housekeeping disarray if not managed. Caring for plants, creating art and researching new decor are way more entertaining than scrubbing a toilet, but most of us need that household order to function at our best. I’ve found if I have a consistent routine and write down daily routines, I am more likely to keep up with housekeeping.

The Mnemonic Method
The best way I have found to organize my routine chores is using mnemonics. If it’s Monday, I am doing M chores – mopping and making weekly menus. Tuesday is the day for toilets (and all the bathroom cleaning) and trash day. Wednesday is for watering indoor plants and wiping down surfaces / windows. If I have a busy day and miss a chore, this system makes it easy to double up.
The Order of Things
In addition to my weekly routine, I have a daily list and a to do list. I create my to do list the night before and then add to it if needed the following morning. My daily list includes things I want to complete every day: complete the daily to do list, sweep, clean kitchen, water / prune outdoor plants, pick up backyard dog doo and organize one drawer or shelf. I try to complete chore one and all of the dailies in the AM, then I can concentrate on the second chore and freelance work tasks after noon.
So in the sample above, on Monday, I make sure I mop and vacuum before noon so I have time in the afternoon to clean out the fridge and make menus for the week. It also works out that trash day is Tuesday and I can get any out of date or old food from the fridge into that week’s pick up. I try to add a quote of the week to keep me centered and grateful. Even though I know I should work out and drink water without writing it my notes, I have found that writing it down helps me stick to it.
Creating your own schedule
Even if the mnemonic method doesn’t work for you, keeping specific chores consistently on the same day is the easiest way to stay ahead of housekeeping chaos. You can download your own blank schedule here and start creating your daily and weekly routines. I’m off to do yoga!
